Desperate or mad?

So Monday this week saw a small wave in Torbay. The day started ok, with a solid 1.5 to 2 foot at Paignton Pier, so looked forward to getting in after work for a relaxing surf. Having been reliably informed by Chris and Sam that it is worth coming down after work, this is the view that met me when i pulled up to the pier at 5.45pm:

Paignton Surf

Paignton Flatness

Paignton Pier was teaming with longboarders, shortboarders, goat boaters and other surf craft eager to take advantage of the mediocre surf, which was at best 1ft on the sets. Chris and Sam were already in the water (WHY?) paddling around waiting for the sets to roll in. I just couldn’t bring myself to get in the water on a wave which didn’t even reach my knee, so sat in the van listening to Scott Mill’s on Radio 1, whilst taking the odd photo to prove how small it really was so i could take the piss out of Chris/Sam later when i write this blog entry - haha.

So the question remains, were Sam, Chris and the hoard of goat boaters and longboarders desperate for a surf, or did they just want to improve their paddling technique? Or maybe it was just to pretend that summer had arrived and flounder around at the end of the pier so people can watch them and think how cool they are?

I dunno, at least they were out there having a bit of fun, and i was sat in my van trying not to cry and harm myself listening to whatever latest Emu (Emo?) music Radio 1 had on their playlists. Chris did admit to me later that he was lost for things to do whilst sat out back and resorted to trying to do hand stands in the water, and swimming across the sea bed so he didn’t get bored! I’m glad i opted for Emu (Emo?) heaven in my van.

The only other incident worthy of a mention that evening was Savage (Robbie) locking his car keys in his car. It took 7 surfers 20 minutes to figure out a way to get the keys back, (nearly smashing the window in the process) until one bright spark (sorry dude, didn’t catch your name) borrowed a long pole with a hook on it from a VW Camper (thanks mate!) and managed to hook the keys out of the ignition from a small gap in the sunroof. Savage then informed us that it wasn’t the first time he has done this. Nice one Sav, you muppet.

So all i can say is if you live in Bali, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji or California, then be on the look out for some guy called Savage, coz he is heading your way real soon! There is a small bet in the Sandskater shop that Mr Savage is going to get himself arrested at some point during his world travels.

Our bets are on marsupial molestation. lol
