Porthcurno Happy Times - Sunday 12th November

A trip to Lands End was called on at the last minute on Sunday when Magicseaweed reports indicated a 9ft NW swell with a 14 second wave period.

Most of the Boscombe crew were out drinking till late on Saturday night to celebrate Will’s birthday, so there was some pretty sore heads on Sunday morning when we arrived at Porthcurno on the south Cornish coast. This was further compounded by the early 5am start to catch the tide.

9 of us made the long journey to Porthcurno. From the Paignton crew was: Matt, Chris, Sam, Adam and Mark, while joining us from the Boscombe crew was Lee, Jax, Dan and Will.

Upon reaching Curno, we were greeted with a solid 3ft swell, and a working sidewash. We checked out Porth Chapel just round the corner, but tide was too high, so we all opted for some sider action at Curno.

Adam Wootton The Paignton groms wasted no time by getting some excellent rides right from the start. Adam was getting some solid liners on the sidewash, and ending them with some pretty neat pop shuv-its.

Its worth noting that he was riding a Circle One EPS 52 inch skimboard, which just goes to show you don’t need to spend a huge fortune on a board to be able to ride waves successfully. (Photo: Adam Wootton riding a Circle One skimboard on the Porthcurno sidewash)Sam pre-bail

Mark, on the otherhand, was riding an ex-Bill Baxter Zap Comp, and was getting some long rides down the beach on the Curno sidewash. The most noteable wipe-out came from Sam, when a solid wave deposited him head and chest first onto dry sand. One of the worst bails seen in a long time, was duly caught on camera by Lee - nice one! (Photo: Sam Tinkler about to get nailed!)

Will and Chris were having a hard time of it. Being goofy footed, the liner wasn’t to their liking, so they didn’t get many waves until the tide started to drop and the waves stopped troughing out. Once this happened, there was no stopping them both!

As always, Dan our resident Air Traffic Controller and part time Borat impressionist, put in a great effort on his Slotstik dispite having only 1 hours sleep the previous night.

Myself (Matt) had a great time learning to ride the sidewash. On occasions i was only metres away from connecting to the main peak, but it didn’t quite come together on the day, so i will have to leave it for another time.

Jax didn’t have a great start - too much booze the night before is my guess ;) - but as the tide dropped he got it together and put in the solid performance that we have come to expect from the Boscombe local! It was a superb day, and i can’t wait to get back to try and get that sidewash dialled in - and i think that can be said for everybody else on the trip.
